Covid-19 and Trauma in Sweden – Small Reduction in Trauma Admissions
How has the pandemic affected trauma incidence in Sweden? Researchers at KMC have looked at all trauma registration in the Swedish trauma registry during the time period between March 1 and June 30 2020, and compared with the corresponding period in 2019.
During 2020, the total number of trauma cases decreased with 24,2 percent. Concurrently the number of injuries per patient and the severity of the cases increased, with significantly higher scores on the trauma severity grading scale NISS (New Injury Severity Score), but no difference in 30-day mortality could be shown. Trauma cases in Sweden have decreased less compared with results from other studies in countries where stricter pandemic restrictions were enforced.
