Background:
Emergo Train System (ETS) is a pedagogical simulation tool used for education, training, and evaluation in emergency and disaster medicine. Within ETS, predefined treatment times are used to simulate clinical workflows. To maintain validity and realism, these times must reflect actual clinical practice.

Objective:
The objective of this study was to empirically measure the time required to insert a peripheral venous catheter (PVC) in hospital settings, in order to validate and, if necessary, revise the treatment time used in ETS.

Results:
An observational study was conducted including 31 PVC insertions performed at an emergency department and an operating theatre. Procedures were carried out by registered nurses and specialist nurses with a mean professional experience of 11.5 years. The mean time required for PVC insertion was 128.8 seconds (SD 115.3), with a median time of 90 seconds. The shortest observed time was 60 seconds and the longest was 660 seconds. Self-reported levels of stress and perceived difficulty were generally low.

The findings support the continued use of a standardized treatment time of 2 minutes for peripheral venous catheter insertion within ETS. The previously established time estimate is consistent with current clinical practice and remains valid for simulation and training purposes.
