Sammanfattning
Background:
Peripheral vascular disease affects a large global population, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where healthcare resources and vascular surgical capacity are limited. In sub-Saharan Africa, increasing prevalence linked to risk factors such as diabetes and smoking creates a growing burden of disease.

Objective:
The purpose of this pre-study directive is to evaluate the feasibility of establishing a vascular surgery exchange program between Region Östergötland and Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH) in Addis Ababa, aiming to build local surgical capacity and provide mutual knowledge exchange.
Results:
The document highlights significant gaps in vascular surgical competence in low-resource settings, particularly in performing basic open vascular procedures. It outlines a structured pre-study including site visits, collaboration with local stakeholders, and assessment of resources. The initiative is expected to enhance training opportunities for both Ethiopian surgeons and Swedish trainees, addressing educational gaps on both sides.

Conclusion:
A vascular surgical exchange program has the potential to strengthen healthcare capacity in Ethiopia while simultaneously improving clinical training for Swedish surgeons. The feasibility study aims to determine the practical conditions for implementing such a mutually beneficial collaboration.
